How do you start making your own choices? Where do ideas come from, and what do you do when you get stuck halfway through one?
This workshop with @switchmeister and @Malena_ explores creativity and improvisation in rope through practical exercises, and attention to the person you are tying with. We will look at how an idea develops, how to give it enough structure to work, and how to recognise when something unexpected offers an interesting direction.
We will begin with what creativity actually means in our tying. Being creative can mean changing something familiar, combining things you already know, or noticing a possibility in a small detail. We will practise generating ideas by changing one element at a time: the direction of a wrap, the position of a limb, the space between both people or the pace of an interaction.
From there, we will explore improvisation: making choices as the interaction unfolds. How do you choose a next step without needing to know the whole sequence? Through exercises, we will develop tools for following an idea, responding to a partner, and finding another route when something does not work. Pausing, repeating, simplifying, and changing direction will all become part of our vocabulary.
We will spend some time creating simple structures and reinforcing them, looking at how connections and the direction of tension help a shape hold together. This gives us a foundation for experimenting and adapting what we make to the body in front of us.
We will then bring these ideas into **one-rope play**. With a limited amount of rope, each choice becomes more noticeable. We will explore how much interaction a few wraps can offer, and how to keep developing an idea when there is no rope left to add.
Finally, we will bring in body handling: how our hands, positioning, and support help us move with a partner and transition between shapes. Given enough time we will go into how untying is part of that process.
*Please note, the exercises and concepts mentioned aren’t sequential, they can all be part of one exercise at the same time*
The aim is to leave with practical ways to begin, continue, and change your tying—and more confidence to explore an idea together without needing to know exactly where it will end.
